Evidence:
Within my ESOL course, I have worked diligently to create lessons and activities that respect the students' cultural and family backgrounds. I have modified lessons and worksheets by adding Spanish translations to ensure that my focus student and other English language learners within the classroom can comprehend the material.
Throughout the semester I had the opportunity to attend three ELL PDs where I learned about the different ways to support and integrate the cultural backgrounds of my students within lessons. For example a recommended strategy for YLAs in 2nd grade is to identify key words and phrases in an illustrated text as well as identifying words and matching pictures with graphic information in an informational text. I had the opportunity to do this in my supervisor observation by identifying new key vocabulary terms in the text, pairing them with an image, a body movement, and a real world example. Not only was I able to accommodate these needs for the ESOL students but I was able to find a text that relates to many of my student's cultural backgrounds because it was about families working together and doing many chores at home and based on my assets profile, many of my students have chores and responsibility at home to help their homes run smoothly.
